Instructions

Definition

Step 1:
The Random House Dictionary defines protocol as "the customs and regulations dealing with diplomatic formality, precedence, and etiquette." Wedding protocol spells out the duties of every member of a wedding party, including the bride and groom and the couples' close relatives. Protocol can also assist couples in deciding who to include in the party, and in what capacity, and how to handle unexpected events such as a last minute cancellation by a member of the wedding.

Types of Attendants

Step 2:
The number of attendants and participants in the wedding party can vary greatly dependent upon the size and formality of the wedding, and it is also a matter of the bride and groom's personal preference. However, it is safe to say that the majority of formal weddings have, at a minimum, a maid or matron of honor and a best man. The maid of honor is the bride's attendant, and she has many different duties to perform both in preparing for the wedding and on the actual wedding day. Typically, a bride will choose one bridesmaid (including the Maid of Honor) for every 50 to 55 guests. The best man is the groom's attendant and likewise plays a very important role in the wedding planning and the actual ceremony. Other wedding party members include additional bridesmaids, groomsmen, flower girl, ring bearer and ushers.

The Maid of Honor's Role

Step 3:
The Maid of Honor plays an extremely important role in the wedding of her friend or sister. She is expected to assist in planning for the ceremony and the events leading up to it, and to support the bride emotionally. Some of the pre-wedding duties of a Maid or Matron of honor can include: accompanying the bride to look at potential wedding and reception locations and to try on wedding dresses, helping her to choose invitations and registry gifts if asked, and helping her to interview or choose a band or DJ, caterer and baker. One of the primary responsibilities of the Maid of Honor is to plan and execute a bridal shower, and if the bride wishes, a bachelorette party. This means that she is also responsible, as the host, for paying for the shower; although it is acceptable to ask other bridesmaids to chip in to help cover expenses.

Best Man

Step 4:
The Best Man is the groom's primary attendant, and as such he helps the groom with duties both before and on the day of the wedding. The Best Man serves as moral support for the groom. His biggest responsibility leading up to the wedding is organizing and hosting a bachelor party. The Best Man generally pays for this expense. He is also responsible for coordinating the male wedding party member's formal wear rentals, picking up and returning the clothing. The Best Man often gives a toast, both at the rehearsal dinner and the wedding reception. The day of the wedding, he assures that the groom is properly attired and arrives at the wedding site on time, carries the bride's ring and signs the marriage certificate as a witness for the groom.

Choosing Attendants

Step 5:
In the past, it was automatically assumed that the bride and groom would choose members of their immediate families to fulfill the important roles in the wedding party, particularly those of Best Man and Maid of Honor. Although many couples do choose a brother or sister to step into these positions, it is not always the case. Because being Best Man or Maid of Honor entails a good deal of work and commitment of time, it is important to speak with people about whether or not they feel comfortable taking on the job. Many brides choose to have several bridesmaids in order to include close friends and family, and choose a sister or best friend to be the Maid of Honor. A Maid of Honor must not only be a good friend, but someone who is trustworthy, dependable and organized and will be able to help you plan your wedding. Likewise, it is important to choose a Best Man who can be counted on to arrive on time and help the groom get ready for the wedding day.
