Marriage is a commitment to life, the best that two people can find and bring out in each other. It offers opportunities for sharing and growth that no other relationship can equal. It is a physical and an emotional joining that is promised for a lifetime.
When two people pledge their love and care for each other in marriage, they create a spirit unique unto themselves which binds them closer than any spoken or written words. Marriage is a promise, a potential made in the hearts of two people who love each other and takes a lifetime to fulfil.

Wording For Wedding Invitations: What To Write?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While standard wording for wedding invitations is considered proper etiquette, today’s couples are turning to new ways to say the same old thing. If you want to invite guests to your wedding in a more creative way, it’s time to intermingle your own ideas. Discover new wording for wedding invitations that will set your special day apart.
The age of couples marrying is older than in the past. Couples often plan and pay for their own weddings and it may seem silly to have parents ‘give’ the bride away in the invitation. Instead of starting with the parent’s request, use your own names.
1. Just the Facts, Please
Simplify the wedding invitation by sticking to the facts. Here is one such example:
Jenny Smith and Michael Jones request the honor of your presence as we join our lives together in wedded bliss. Please join us on Saturday, June Seventh at Half Past Four in the afternoon in the Blissfield Gardensat 2000 Ivy Drive, Bancroft, Ohio.
The simplicity of the wedding invitation wording leaves plenty of space for a quote or poem. Is there a poet you have always admired? If so, incorporate this person’s work into your invitations for an added touch of creativity. Just remember to give the poet credit. If you like this idea, read on.
2. Poetry in Motion
Imagine this poem piece in the top center of your invitation:
Come settle with me
Let us be neighbors to the stars
-Rumi
Join the two lines with “and” if you want to use it as a line at the top of your invitation. The invitation wording would continue by inviting guests to the wedding and providing all pertinent information.
Another line from a Rumi poem could be used liked this:
“My heart has burned with passion and has searched forever for this wondrous beauty that I now behold.” Please join Jenny Smith and Michael Jones as we profess our love and passion through marriage vows on (date),” continue with the time and location.
A famous poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Sonnet XLIII or How do I Love Thee, can be used in it’s entirety on the front page and pared down for the invitation wording. For example, the invitation might incorporate the fifth stanza into the invitation.
“I love thee to the level of everyday’s most quiet need, by sun and candle-light…” Please join us, Jenny Smith and Michael Jones, as we begin sharing our life of love and every day needs with each other on (date).
3. To Quote My Favorite Author
William Wordsworth penned this quote that can be paraphrased for a lovely opening to a wedding invitation: “Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart.”
A quote from a book, love letter, poem or person can be worked seamlessly into a wedding invitation. How about consulting the book about two star-crossed lovers for inspiration? Here is a famous quote from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet Act I, Scene V:
“My bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love as deep; the more I give to thee, the more I have, for both are infinite.” William Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet Act I, Scene V.
This quote is especially meaningful for beach or seaside weddings. Follow the quote with the invitation: Mr. and Mrs. John Smith request your presence for the seaside wedding of our daughter, Jenny Smith to the love of her life, Michael Jones, son of William and Betsy Jones. Continue with the date, time and exact location of the wedding.
4. Original Writing
If you feel confident with original wording for wedding invitations without the help of poets or authors, start by listing every wonderful attribute of the person you are about to marry. From the list, create a unique invitation. A fantasy wedding invitation might read: From the magical realm of love, we found each other, leaving the “I” behind and becoming “we.”
Another way to write an original love poem to use for your wedding invitations is to sit down and free write. Start moving your hand and let the words flow when you think of your mate. Here are some questions to consider:
* When did you meet?
* Where did you meet?
* How did you feel the first time you saw him?
* What was the most romantic thing he ever did for you?
* When did you first know that you loved him?
* How do you feel about him right now?
Next, go through what you wrote and pick out sentences you love. Replace passive verbs with strong, active ones. Read your prose over again, this time picking out a metaphor that ties three of the moments together. This is an example: His love is like a well that flows deep, fresh and pure.
Read what you have written out loud. The poem should flow smoothly and sound melodic as you read it aloud. Leave the poem alone for a few days and then go back to reread it. Show what you have written to your future husband and suggest he do the same. Perhaps you can work together to come up with a line or two that speaks of your love for each other.
5. Humorous Wedding Invitations
Not everyone wants romantic or classical wedding invitations. Brides and grooms with a sense of humor might prefer to write a fun invitation that showcases who they are. The casual nature of this style of invitation opens the door to creative wording. An example of the wording for a humorous wedding invitation follows:
Well, folks, she finally got her hooks into him! Jenny Smith and Michael Jones are tying the knot at half-past two on Saturday, June Seventh Two thousand and eight at a lakeside wedding. The parents of the couple, (fill in blank), suggest you mark your calendar and bring your fishing gear.
This couple obviously loves fishing and boating. While this approach may have been unseemly in the past, it is just another way of a couple to express their own personalities.
How to Write a Wedding Invitation
As you work on writing your own wedding invitation wording, keep in mind that you have limited space.
Within the confines of the invitation, find room for the important information such as who, what, where and when. Once you have figured how much room you need for the four w’s, you can play around with the creative wording.
If you want to stick with tradition, use guidelines for who is hosting the wedding such as “hosted by bride and groom”; “hosted by bride’s family”; “hosted by bride, groom and groom’s family”; or “hosted by bride, groom and both families.” You can find these guidelines online at various websites that focus on invitations and weddings.
Brides and grooms are no longer confined by stiff rules of etiquette. Anything goes as long as it is tasteful enough not to offend anyone. Coming up with your own wording for wedding invitations takes more time, but in the end your invitation will say exactly what you want it to. Let these suggestions be your guide to a wedding invitation inspired by the love and joy that brought the two of you together.
